They started with a vision from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eye-square.com\/en\/michael-schiessl\/\">Michael Schiessl<\/a>, who wanted to capture the spirit of doing the right thing by commemorating the martyrdom of German heroes during WWII, with a particular focus on those from Berlin.<\/p>\n<p id=\"art_p\" class=\"padding-btm-100em\">The technique begins with a traditional-medium hand sketch on paper of each martyr&#8217;s original photograph. Using photoshop and illustrator, the same sketch is then altered, tweaked, and minimalized to achieve the &#8216;simplistic&#8217; look of the final versions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"art_p\" class=\"padding-btm-100em\">We would like to honor a total of 20 martyrs. Sophie Scholl and Alexander Schmorell are depicted in these portraits. Their medium of protest at the time was leaflets, through which they exposed atrocities. There arrested by the Germans. Held in JDG Westerbork transit camp. From there, transported out to KL Auschwitz concentration camp where in KL Auschwitz II Birkenau subcamp murdered in a gas chamber. Pfarrer Albert Hirsch was arrested by the Gestapo and brought before a special court. In the Roman Catholic Church, he is venerated as a martyr and regarded as a blessed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #00008b;\">Maria Terwiel was arrested on September 17, 1942. As a supporter of the German resistance group &#8220;Red Orchestra,&#8221; she distributed illegal leaflets and put up stickers against the National Socialist propaganda exhibition. He joined the resistance and was sentenced to death for his part in the failed 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #00008b;\">Chaplain Herbert Simoleit worked in the ministry in Greifswald among resettled Germans from Poland. In 1941, Simoleit was appointed to a post in Stettin and became a popular minister for young people and looked after soldiers stationed in Stettin and organised weekly discussion circles for them in which he explored religious and political issues, and talked about the SS&#8217;s crimes against the Jews. Simoleit was arrested at the beginning of February 1943 and maltreated during interrogation.
